In recent years, we have experienced the proliferation of videogames that have, as their main game mode the creation of in-game content. While there is literature that has looked at a variety of aspects of these games, it is important to study the possible ways to make money that emerge from their context. Our ethnographic study revealed a vibrant market for commissioning in Minecraft's creative community. Minecraft Our findings highlight the three principal players in this market: the clients, who own Minecraft servers and the contractors who manage the client's requests for Minecraft maps and the builders who are responsible for the development of these maps. Our research has revealed that the commodity in play is not in-game content, as one might expect, but the process of creating the content. These findings reveal that the Minecraft structure currently in place is influenced by commissioning - a well-organised process initiated and sustained by the game's community. They also challenge the notion that the creation of content in gaming environments is free labor that is only exploited by the game's developers.
