SIM lock:

A SIM-Lock, Network-Lock, Carrier Lock, imei lock or (master) SUBSIDY lock is a technical restriction built into GSM and CDMA cellular phones by manufacturers for use by service providers to restrict using these phones to a particular locations and/or networks. This is contrary to a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't enforce any SIM restrictions.Unlocking a smartphone is practically universally legal. Moreover, it is legal for providers to force SIM locks for certain periods of time, differing by region.

Unlocking Technology:

A phone can be unlocked simply by entering a code supplied by the service operator. Different mechanisms contain software running on the device or a computer connected to the handset, hardware devices that attach to the mobile or over-the-air by the provider. Most of the time the unlock operation is permanent. The code needed to get rid of all locks from a mobile phone is known as the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the phone is network locked it will typically display one of these messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

The main reason to unlock a mobile phone is to be able to use it with a different SIM card. Customers might like to keep on using their phone but with a new provider or if traveling in another country they might need to connect to a foreign network with a pay as you go subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Lots of companies offer a on-line smartphone unlocking service . This service needs individuals whom would like to unlock a mobile to give their IMEI number to a service supplier and quite often they will also require the country and cellular network the device is locked to, sometimes sent via email or submitted on their web-site. The organization then will supply (in return for a fee) a unlock code for the mobile phone. For many brands such as Nokia and Samsung various services also supply special remote-unlocking software with instructions, when a cable connection is needed to remove the SIM lock at home. Such suppliers may well email the unlocking code or software that should remotely unlock the device. The cost for unlocking a cellular phone can differ depending on the network it is locked to and the device model itself, as each unlock code is unique to each specific handset.
